The most popular party drugs are also some of the most dangerous drugs around. The 3 most popular party drugs are MDMA, cocaine, and methamphetamine.
I remember in high school going to my first rave at a club in Arlington, Texas.
It was a culture shock considering not only had I never been to a club of any sort, but I had never been around people (in this case kids) who were under the influence of a whole variety of different types of party drugs, drugs that are still popular today in clubs, raves, and parties across the globe.
As a teen, the drugs available at the club were extremely tempting due to the promise of increased energy and an altered and seemingly overly-positive mood, which was displayed by the behavior and energy of all of the other club-goers who were under the influence.
This was definitely a facade considering the hangover that you would wake up with the next day after staying awake all night rolling balls on ecstasy.
After personally nearly having a heat stroke from dehydration and after seeing a person overdose and nearly lose their life at a rave, not only do I no longer attend these sorts of things, but I also don’t touch any of the most popular club drugs that are so abundantly present in every night club you walk into.
Here are 3 of the most popular party drugs (and why they’re so dangerous).
MDMA — The Most Popular Party Drug
From samhsa.gov, “3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA) is a synthetic drug that dramatically alters a person’s mood and perception while creating a feeling of very intense arousal.”
MDMA is chemically a lot like both stimulants and hallucinogens in terms of helping to create feelings of emotional comfort, pleasure, a significant increase in energy, as well as a distorted sensory and time perception.
MDMA, also known as ecstasy or molly, was one of the most popular party drugs in the nightclub scene as well as other different “all night long dance parties,” also known as “raves.” Now the drug has a much broader audience, transcending the club scene and bleeding into other venues and households near you.
I would like to note that as dangerous as this drug can potentially be, especially for a drug addict, this drug also has medicinal value used in the proper medically and doctor-supervised situations for the sake of treating things such as major depressive disorder or PTSD. Keep in mind that the drug is typically micro-dosed in these sorts of situations.
It is however extremely difficult to get real pure MDMA like you would find at a clinic that offers treatment using this powerful drug. Most of what can be found on the streets or in clubs these days has been cut with other drugs, primarily drugs such as methamphetamine and heroin.
This is typically involved in many of the drug overdoses that are associated with MDMA.
Not only do you not know what MDMA has potentially cut with, but another issue is that kids will take it and take it and take it and not realize how dehydrated and water-deprived their body has gradually become throughout the night.
This can often result in a fatal situation. This is why you’ll see so many people in the club carrying a bottle of water in their hands the whole night.
These are seasoned veterans who are willing to take the risk associated with going hard on these sorts of drugs and are trying to at least keep their bodies going while riding the sleepless wave into a deep dark pit of insomnia and come down.
MDMA in its purest form often comes in the form of a crystal-like substance and has to be crushed up. It is then typically snorted or swallowed and sometimes people will shoot it up intravenously.
This is one of the most popular party drugs that often comes in the form of a colorful pill that often looks like an animal or a car, or will have a logo on it such a the playboy bunny or the Channel logo.
When you see MDMA in this form it is often cut with something else. The crystal is typically going to be the closest thing to pure MDMA.
Another of the most popular party drugs that can really destroy a person’s life and can be found in probably every nightclub in the world is cocaine.
From americanaddictioncenters.org, “Cocaine is a powerfully addictive stimulant drug made from the leaves of the coca plant native to South America” and can also be found in most likely every single nightclub in the United States at least, especially the type where you have to buy a bottle just to be let through the door.
Also from americanaddictioncenters.org, we learn that “although health care providers can use it for valid medical purposes, such as local anesthesia for some surgeries, like MDMA, recreational cocaine use is illegal. As a street drug, cocaine looks like a fine, white crystal powder.”
Street and club dealers both will often mix it with things like cornstarch, talcum powder, or flour to increase profits, oftentimes ripping off the customer.
They may also mix it with other drugs such as the stimulant amphetamine, or synthetic opioids, including fentanyl.
This is how dealers get away with cutting drugs and take advantage of their unfortunate future and existing customers. Fentanyl is associated with the increasing number of overdoses, especially here in the United States.
It is 100 times stronger than heroin and way cheaper to obtain. Even though it is a synthetic opioid, it is still used and cut into some of the other most popular party drugs, like cocaine and heroin.
Combining synthetic opioids with cocaine is especially risky when it comes to the risk of potential heart failure, especially when people using cocaine don’t realize it contains this dangerous additive.
One of the biggest reasons associated with the increase in deaths here in the United States amongst cocaine users is people overdosing from cocaine that had been tampered with and cut with a synthetic opioid, like fentanyl.
People at clubs will often snort cocaine powder through the nose and will also rub the powder onto their gums. Oftentimes people will dissolve the powder and shoot it up. Combining cocaine and heroin in a syringe is something known as a “speedball” on the streets.
Cocaine is also smoked to produce vapors that are inhaled through the lungs. This particular form of cocaine is called crack, getting its name honestly from the crackling sound that the drug makes while it is being heated and smoked.
Here are some of the serious long term health consequences associated with frequent cocaine use from drugabuse.gov, if that’s something your pocketbook can afford,
- snorting: loss of smell, nosebleeds, frequent runny nose, and problems with swallowing
- smoking: cough, asthma, respiratory distress, and higher risk of infections like pneumonia
- consuming by mouth: severe bowel decay from reduced blood flow
- needle injection: higher risk for contracting HIV, hepatitis C, and other bloodborne diseases, skin or soft tissue infections, as well as scarring or collapsed veins
After digging through articles from medlineplus.gov/clubdrugs.html, another of the most popular party drugs that will quickly destroy a person’s life is methamphetamine.
Methamphetamine, like cocaine and ecstasy, is a central nervous system stimulant, and arguably one of the most dangerous and risky club drugs out there in terms of its short-term and long-term health risks and just how easy it can rob a person of their soul, literally.
From medline.gov, “It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control,” which is often why it is prescribed in order to treat people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD.
Methamphetamine is also used to treat obesity in people who have not lost weight with diets or other treatments and can sometimes be prescribed for other “off-label” purposes.
I had a psychiatrist try to prescribe me Adderall because antidepressants were not helping with my depression.
I personally became physically and psychologically addicted to it. I needed it in order to get through work and do any other normal daily activity. It honestly destroyed my life in less than a year.
Granted, I am a person who would consider myself a drug addict in recovery, so I am prone to become addicted to things that can dramatically change the way I feel in seconds.
People in clubs or at raves will often snort, smoke, and sometimes inject this popular party drug, much like the other 2 drugs in this brief article. The only time I used methamphetamine back in my using days I was up for three days without really eating.
By the third day, I went into something known as meth-induced psychosis and ended up picking a huge crater-sized hole in my face overnight without even remembering doing it.
Hopefully this helps someone out there who may have been in the dark in regards to some of the most popular party drugs and what some of the consequences are associated with each one of the particular narcotics I listed.
What other popular party drugs do you think should be on the list? Let me know in the comments.
